Fishburne Military School’s Daniel May (Stafford, VA) on 1st place podium during last year’s Virginia Independent Conference tournament.

On Saturday, Fishburne Military School’s Daniel May ’15 (Stafford, VA) fought his way to the top in the Ed Cassell Classic wrestling tournament held at Virginia High School in Bristol, VA. May took home top honors in the tournament, earning the title “Most Outstanding Wrestler” for the event and sparking praise that would follow him all the way back to Waynesboro.

Writing for the Bristol Herald Courier and for TriCities.com, Allen Gregory noticed May’s performance and had this to say:

Daniel May of Fishburne Military School in Waynesboro, Virginia, delivered a textbook performance en route to a 5-1 win over 2014 state qualifier Josh Vance of Greeneville. May, who has a record of 22-0, was named the event’s most outstanding wrestler.

“If you want to do well in February, you have to put in the work during January,” said May, the lone Fishburne wrestler in the event. “I don’t worry about winning or losing. I just concentrate on wrestling well. I was able to ride my opponent pretty well today, but I have to keep improving.

The goal for May, who transferred to Fishburne from Colonial Forge High School in Stafford, Virginia, is to place at the national prep tournament and then wrestle at the Merchant Marine Academy. He’s currently ranked first among Virginia’s private school wrestlers in his weight class (132).

But May wasn’t just earning a name for himself ON the mat this weekend. His positive attitude and personal demeanor drew attention from a number of others attending the event. Virginia High School’s Head Wrestling Coach, Josh Shuler, was so impressed with May that he was moved to write to Fishburne’s Superintendent, Headmaster and Head Wrestling Coach:

I have never heard so many positive comments on a wrestler at any tournament. Everyone was blown away with how well [May] handled himself on and off the mat.  He was polite, well spoken, and an excellent wrestler.  Allen Gregory, from our local newspaper, included him in the article he wrote and told me personally that he has never met such an outstanding, well mannered, and well-spoken high school student.  He is an excellent wrestler and an even better young man.  He had some tough competition in his weight class and he was able to defeat the competition with great wrestling and showed even better class.  Even the event staff thought highly of this young man and were blown away by his character.  Again, thank you for allowing Daniel to come to our tournament and it was a pleasure to watch him wrestle.

Daniel May and the Fishburne Military School Caissons will be at home this Thursday, January 15th, for a VIC Quad-Match hosting teams from Blue Ridge School, Covenant and Miller School. All are encouraged to attend.
