Fishburne Military School at Kite Day
Waynesboro, VA — The Fishburne Military School Key Club was on hand Saturday to once again assist the City of Waynesboro’s Parks and Recreation department with their annual community Kite Day. Fourteen Cadets served in two shifts as volunteers for the event which has been a growing Waynesboro favorite since 2006.
In all, Kite Day drew approximately 800 families, kite enthusiasts and curious onlookers to enjoy the seasonably beautiful Valley day at Coyner Springs Park. Over 300 kites were distributed to the visitors and the blue skies above the park were soon dotted with festive splashes of color.
Mrs. Kathy Berrang, Fishburne Military School’s Student Services Coordinator and Key Club sponsor oversaw the second shift of Cadet volunteers and noted that “The Cadets assembled and handed out paper kites to kids, explaining how to decorate them and giving them tips on how to fly them…our boys were so good with the small children”.
“This year,” Berrang goes on, “the Fishburne Cadets were even invited to participate in the kite races! They had a blast with that. They always enjoy being out there with the public and assisting with kite day, but this year they had the opportunity to participle in some of the fun events.”
The Fishburne Military School Key Club lends their effort throughout the year to various city-sponsored events such as Kite Day, Fall Foliage Festival, and the Tour de Valley bicycling event.
The oldest and smallest of all military schools for boys in Virginia, Fishburne Military School’s college-prep curriculum is built upon the structure of an Army JROTC program. FMS is designated as a JROTC Honor Unit with Distinction and may nominate qualified candidates to the United States Service Academies. Fishburne hosts one of only four Summer JROTC programs in the nation, accredited by US Army Cadet Command.
