Fishburne Cross Country Resilient in Heat
recap from Coach Tankard
Penn Laird, VA — Brutal heat on Saturday could not stop the Fishburne Military School Cross Country runners. With the temperature hovering around 90 degrees, our runners had a hard time maintaining strong first mile paces. The focus went from passing other runners to not passing out. The Caissons proved resilient.
In the Varsity race, the Caissons bested VIC conference rival Eastern Mennonite. Tyler Long (Beavercreek, OH) scored first for the Caissons, finishing 36 of 107 runners. He was followed by Alexander Isaacs (Reston, VA) in 50th place and freshman Garrett Rose (Columbus, IN) in 74th place.
In the JV race, top three finishers were: Jesse Jungman (Escondido, CA) 21st of 78 runners. Evan LaQuaglia (Upper Marlboro, MD) was next at 28th and Cody Chapple (Grottoes, VA) finished 34th. The team finished 5th of 8 teams and bested local high schools Broadway, Riverheads and William Monroe.
The Caissons run next at the Augusta County Invitational at nearby Wilson Memorial High School on Saturday morning. Many of the same 2A and 3A high schools from this Saturday will be there and will again pose another tough challenge for our runners. It’s a great way to prepare for our conference rivals whom we meet later in the season.
Fishburne Military School is the oldest and smallest of all military schools for boys in Virginia. Its college-prep curriculum is built upon the structure of an Army JROTC program. FMS is designated as a JROTC Honor Unit with Distinction and may nominate qualified candidates to the United States Service Academies. Fishburne hosts one of only four Summer JROTC programs in the nation, accredited by US Army Cadet Command.
