Fishburne Baseball On A Streak
Report from Coach C
Last night, the Caissons Baseball team travelled to Lynchburg to take on VIC foe Virginia Episcopal School. This game comes after the Caissons have won their last 2 games by a combined score of 47 – 9. So, after 2 big wins in a row the team’s confidence was rising fast. They have started to really gel as a team over the past weeks and things are going well. So, how did it go? Let’s take a look…
The first inning would see the Caissons put 1 run on the board in the top of the inning then stall out. VES came to the plate and Wade, pitching for the Caissons, would shut them out and hold on to a 1-run lead at the end of the first inning. That lead would be short lived.
In the second inning, Fishburne failed to push a run across the plate. VES then came up to the plate in the bottom half and, with the help of some throwing errors on the Caissons’ part, put 3 runs on the board to take a 3 – 1 lead.
The Caissons failed to score any runs in the third and fourth innings. While VES had some threats they were also unable to score; so, the score remained VES 3 FMS 1 going into the fifth.
At the start of the fifth inning the Caissons knew that time was now running short as we had only 9 more outs to get back in this game. Well, the “never say die” attitude of this team came shinning through along with the awaking of the bats. The Caissons put up 2 runs to tie the score. In the bottom half of the fifth inning, the Caissons would shut out VES again to hold the score at VES 3 FMS 3.
The FMS bats kept cracking in sixth inning as the Caissons scored 3 more runs. Fishburne would once again hold VES scoreless and, at the end of 6, it was now FMS 6 VES 3.
The seventh and final inning would start with the Caissons getting an early base runner but they were unable to put up any more runs and held on to a slim 3 run lead. VES was at the top of its batting order and possibly poised to get back into this game. The first batter was put out. Then VES got a base hit. A stolen base put the VES runner on 2nd with just one out. The next batter hit a long fly ball to right field that was handled by England and then thrown in to hold the base runner on second. Now, just one out away from holding on for the win, the ball was put in Wade’s hands to try to complete the game…and he did so with a final strike out giving him a complete game and the Caissons a 6 – 3 victory.
Great job by the Caissons who now hold a 3 – 2 record in the VIC and are on the verge of locking up a spot in the VIC Championship tournament. The team’s overall record is now 4 – 2.
Next up for the Caissons Baseball team is MMA in a HOME game Tuesday 16 April at 1630. Come out and support the Caissons when they take on rival MMA and try to run the team’s win streak to 4 games.
Go CAISSONS!!!
