Fishburne Baseball defeats Blue Ridge School

Report from Coach C:

DSC_0030The Caissons Baseball team has had a very busy week  playing 3 games. After last weeks opening season win over Holy Cross, the team faced off with LCA on Monday, and then EMHS on Tuesday suffering back to back losses. The second loss, to EMHS, was a very tough one on the team as they had the runners on base to tie the game in the bottom of the last inning and on a very questionable call the game was over with FMS suffering a 4 – 2 loss.

Last night saw the Caissons travel to St. George and take on the Barons of the Blue Ridge School. This was a very important match-up within the VIC. Our team has set making the VIC Tournament this year as their goal after not getting into the tourney the past several years. Another VIC loss would truly hurt the team’s chances of getting to that goal.

For the first time Fishburne’s bats were awake right from the get go and the Caissons put 4 runs up in the top of the first inning. The Barons answered with 1 run in the bottom of the first to make the score 4 – 1 at the end of one.

The second inning would see the Caissons go down in order 1 2 3 and no runs scored. The Barons would also be held scoreless in the 2nd inning so the score would remain 4 – 1.

In the third inning the floodgates opened and the Caissons put 7 more runs on the board to take an 11 – 1 lead going into the bottom of the third. The Barons would again be held scoreless to end the inning.

The forth inning would see the Caisson put up more runs, jumping out to a 16 – 1 lead. The Barons this time would answer with 5 runs of their own to bring the score at the end of the forth inning to 16 – 6.

At the beginning of the fifth inning you could hear the plink plink plink going on and it was not the ball coming off the bats (well not yet), it was sleet hitting the fence and the dugout roof. The temperature had dropped and it was extremely cold now, (more like football weather then baseball) THEN the ball started to make that same sound as Caisson after Caisson stepped to the plate to put up 8 more runs in the top of the fifth inning and run the lead up to 24 – 6.

Now in the bottom of the fifth the cold had really come in and the darkness was coming soon, it was important to get this inning done in order finish the game by the 10 run rule and for the game would to be official.  Phillip Dwyer took to the mound again as he had pitched the entire game so far. He had just one warning from me: “Walk one and I bring in a new pitcher to close this game out”. Well, I guess that was all he needed. With a strike out and 2 quick ground balls, the game was over. Final Score Caissons 24 Blue Ridge 6. Big VIC win for the Caissons.

Every member of the team did a great job at the plate and in the field. This moves the overall and VIC record to 2 – 2.

Next up:  Tuesday at MMA (non conference game), then Thursday at VES (another key VIC match up).

GO CAISSONS!!!
