Ed Huckaby: A new beginning for the postgrad program at Fishburne
Ed Huckaby’s Fishburne Military School postgraduate basketball program is coming off the best season in school history – a 26-6 record and a first-ever appearance in the National Prep Championships.
The talk around campus in Waynesboro heading into the 2013-2014 season is that Huckaby might have the best team that he’s had in his five years at FMS, which is saying a lot.
“We’ve got a really good point guard in Jordon Talley. I’ve had some great point guards here. The best point guard that I’ve had here was Quincy Taylor. That’s always my measuring stick. Talley’s in that same conversation,” said Huckaby of Talley, who averaged 11.3 points and 3.9 assists per game for Henrico (Va.), the 2012-2013 Group AAA state champs.
And then there’s prized recruit Jabari Craig (6’11”, 230, Toronto), who is attracting the recruiting attention of the likes of Arizona, UConn, Florida State, LSU and others.
Craig is “by far the best five man we’ve ever had here. Two years, and he’s in the draft,” Huckaby said.
“So we’ve got some depth, we’ve got some size. I’m really excited about this team,” said Huckaby, who has to feel like this is a bit of a rebuilding season, in one sense. He’s had to replace his entire staff from a year ago with the departures of Brian Benator, Derrick Robinson and Jeff Schoenle. Huckaby’s staff this year includes Cedrick Broadhurst, Ernest McGill and Johnathan Mills.
“It’s a different season for me in the sense that I’ve got new staff,” Huckaby said. “I’ve got to teach the new staff as well as the new players my system, how I want things. So it’s been a learning process.”
