Caissons Edge Out Hargrave on the Road
Report by Coach Carl Lambert
Fishburne’s varsity basketball team made the long trek to Chatham, Virginia, to face Hargrave Military Academy’s characteristically strong squad last night. Once again down a couple strong players due to illness, it looked to be a tough road game, which is exactly what it proved to be.
Hargrave fielded some great talent, Including a seven-foot post player (no exaggeration). Our opponent came out strong, while also managing to get Fishburne in early foul trouble with several of our players.
Hargrave also pressed from the very beginning (never easing up), so your Caissons had to work hard from the get-go.
Todd James came out swinging and racked up 11 points just in the first half. Deon Washington contributed six of his own in the first two quarters, followed by Hunter Couchot with five, David Oye with four and Jett Saunders with two. Score at the half: Fishburne 28, Hargrave 21.
Adding to Fishburne’s overall efforts were Leon Dean, Mike Poillon, McKinley Duffer and Brian Reaves, who all battled hard on both offense and defense. Hargrave wasn’t about to lie down easily, though, as they battled back within five by the end of the third quarter.
As things rolled into the fourth quarter, Hargrave turned up the pressure, including many intentional fouls at the end to send Fishburne to the line for a chance at getting the ball back. Your Caissons did not disappoint, and the nail-biter of a game ended with Fishburne on top, 55 to 50.
Fishburne’s final stats included a very impressive 21 total points by James, 15 by Washington and 10 by Saunders.Couchot finished with five, and Oye had his four.
The long ride back was sweetened by not only victory, but a gorging sit-down meal, thanks in large part to the generosity of Cadet Duffer’s father, who joined the team for dinner.
Fishburne now sits at a 3:1 overall record, with a 2:0 tally for our conference. Coach Broadhurst and I commend the team, as we now look forward to another away game tomorrow at Randolph Macon Academy in Front Royal, Virginia.
