Cadet Honored with Leadership Award
Fishburne Military School junior from South Fulton, TN, receives Leadership Award
Waynesboro, VA — Fishburne Military School Cadet Joseph Presley Thomas Jones, of South Fulton, TN, was officially presented with the Military Order of the Purple Heart’s annual Leadership Award on Wednesday. The Military Order of the Purple Heart Award recognizes an outstanding cadet who is enrolled in the ROTC/JROTC program and demonstrates leadership ability.
Jones, son of Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Jones, is a junior at Fishburne MIlitary School.
The award is given through The Military Order of the Purple Heart’s Youth Programs, which are focused on fostering patriotism and good citizenship among America’s youth. The program recognizes outstanding leadership in cadets and midshipmen through the Senior and Junior ROTC programs in the United States and Department of Defense Dependent Schools worldwide.
After presenting the award, LTC Robert Hunt USA(ret), Fishburne’s Senior Army Instructor, noted “Cadet Jones’ outstanding performance at this year’s JCLC [Junior Cadet Leadership Challenge], his professionalism and maturity within the Corps of Cadets, and his desire to continuously improve upon his leadership skills made him a prime candidate for this prestigious award. We are all very proud of this young man.”
In order to be eligible for the award, cadets must be an underclassman; have a positive attitude toward ROTC/JROTC and country; hold a leadership position in the cadet corps; be active in school and community affairs; attain a grade of “B” or better in all subjects for the previous semester; and not have been a previous recipient of this award.
Fishburne Military School is the oldest and smallest of all military schools for boys in Virginia. Its college-prep curriculum is built on the structure of an Army JROTC program. FMS has been designated as a JROTC Honor Unit with Distinction and may nominate qualified candidates to the United States Service Academies. Fishburne hosts one of only four Summer JROTC programs in the nation that is accredited by US Army Cadet Command.
